Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten 

Daß ich so traurig bin; 

Ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten 

Das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn. 

Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt, 

Und ruhig fließt der Rhein; 

Der Gipfel des Berges funkelt 

Im Abendsonnenschein. 

Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet 

Dort oben wunderbar, 

Ihr gold'nes Geschmeide blitzet 

Sie kämmt ihr gold'nes Haar. 

Sie kämmt es mit gold'nem Kamme 

Und singt ein Lied dabei; 

Das hat eine wundersame 

Gewaltige Melodei. 

Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe 

ergreift es mit wildem Weh, 

Er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe, 

Er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh'. 

Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen 

Am Ende Schiffer und Kahn; 

Und das hat mit ihrem Singen 

Die Lorelei getan.

Die Lorelei

I know not, what it is portending

that I am so depressed;

a legend from olden days past

will not leave my mind alone.

The breeze is cool and it darkens,

and peaceful flows the Rhine;

the peak of the mountain sparkles

with evening's setting sun.

The fairest maiden sits perched

right up there wondrously,

her golden jewelry flashes

she combs her golden hair.

She combs with a comb all golden

and thus she sings a song;

that has a mysteriously

tyrannical melody.

The sailor in tiny vessel

is seized with a savage woe,

he sees not the rocky reef edge,

and that's the deed, by her singing

I think that the waves have devoured

at last the sailor and boat;

and that's the deed, by her singing

the Lorelei has done.

Die Lorelei

Je suis en proie à la tristesse. 

D’où cela vient-il? Je ne sais.

De ce conte du temps passé

Qui hante mon âme sans cesse?

C’est le soir, la brise est légère.

On voit couler, calme, le Rhin

Et luire le haut du ravin

Où le soleil se réverbère.

Mais, la vierge qui est assise

Là-haut est plus splendide encor,

Elle peigne ses cheveux d’or

Tandis que sa parure irise.

D’un peigne d’or elle caresse

Ses blonds cheveux, tout en chantant;

Ah, qu’il est étrange son chant !

Que sa mélodie est traîtresse !

Le marin dans sa frêle barge

Subit ce charme impérieux,

Délaissant les brisants, ses yeux

Fixent le sommet de l’alpage.

Les eaux, je crois, se refermèrent

Sur barque et marin à la fois.

Et voilà donc ce que peut faire

La Lorelei avec sa voix !

Traduction dediée à Zlata Zunic

Ja ne znam, što li to značiti treba

Da tako žaloban budem;

Jedna bajka iz starih doba

Nije či se našla u duhu mom.

Hladan je zrak i taman,

I mirno Rajna struji;

Vrh  brjegova obasjan

U večernjem suncu sjaji.

Tamo gore predivna

Najljepša djeva  sjedi,

Blistaju njena uresja zlatna 

Dok ona svoje kose od zlata redi.

Ona se češlja češljem od zlata

I pri tome jednu pjesmu pjeva;

Čudesno je moćna ta

Draž njenoga napjeva.

Lađar sa svoje male brodice

Zarobljen njenom divljom čari,

Ne vidje podvodne litice,

On gleda samo u vis prema gori. 

Ja vjerujem, da na koncu valovima,  

 Lađar i barka biše progutani;

A da pjesmama svojima 

Lorelei to učini.
